TO EMPOWER DEAF YOUTH IN MEDIA
On 1st September 2024, the Media4Deaf project officially launched, aiming to provide media training for Deaf young people across Europe. Led by Teckenbro from Sweden, in partnership with Turkoois (Netherlands), manua (Germany), and DeafStudio (Slovakia), this two-year initiative will run until 31st August 2026. Together, these organisations will offer a new programme designed to equip Deaf youth with essential media skills.
The Media4Deaf project addresses a critical need for structured training in media presentation, especially for those who want to work in front of the camera. Deaf youth often face barriers when it comes to translating articles from written to signed language, and this project will tackle that issue head-on by developing a comprehensive curriculum. The training will cover everything from presentation techniques to content dissemination, aiming to fill a growing gap in Deaf media.
In this project Deaf young people, aged 15 to 30 years old, will not only receive hands-on training but will also contribute to creating new media content, strengthening their ability to represent themselves and their communities. Many digital media pieces in four different sign languages are expected to be produced by 20 participants, which will be showcased on an online platform.
This collaboration, co-funded by Erasmus+, builds on the experience of these four partner organisations, all of whom are part of the Deaf Journalism Europe initiative. The project aims to ensure that Deaf youth are better prepared to work in media, increase their employability, and promote accessibility in digital content creation across Europe.
